NIZO

Nizo solved the problem of multiple gauges in an interesting way - on top of a base, with a permanent lamphouse, sits a separate, interchangeable unit for each gauge. Pix 2&3 show my Nizo Model H, with a 9.5 mech fitted and a 16mm mech beside it. Further down, the 9.5 Model D.

There are some interesting features. Pic 2 wrongly shows the small pulleys top and bottom linked by a belt. In fact, the lower one drives the take-up spool and is specifically designated as a take-off point for sound sync - maybe there was a sound attachment like for the Bolex DA. A feature of the machine is the ability to use a wide range of lamps (2nd image in 3rd row below). This may be why there is a separate motor for the lamp cooling fan, which can be seen in the underside pic of the last image below. There is also provision for changing the range over which the main motor speed control operates. All in all, a very versatile machine. For some reason, a previous owner had broken the connection to the wiper on the motor resistance and led the resulting two wires to an external two-pin socket. No idea why; shorting them is necessary for the motor to run, tho' I have yet to make any tests of the machine actually in use. Although capacity is only 400', special longer arms were available according to the instructions. These refer to mechs being available for 8, 9.5 and 16mm, but not the rumoured 17.5.

One very odd thing; the adjustable front feet. The thread is 0.25" BSW - given its German provenance, how could this be?

Here are the instructions; they are in French. Page 1 after the (two versions of) the cover, is a key to some very good pix near the end, and should be quite easy to understand even in French.

This is a 9.5mm Nizo Model D, of which I had not previously heard. All the controls are on the back or at the rear. It has complex ratchet arrangements on both top and bottom spool pulleys. Like so many machines of this era, including the Nizo Model H with the interchangeable mechs, this machine has only 400' spool capacity.
